This will be a fun time to do a flag art project. We will be doing ours Eric Carle Style.
1. First you will need several pieces of good heavy art paper. If you buy a sketch pad, you can just rip the paper out. Each child will need a page to painted red and one to be painted blue.
2.Get out your paints and paint the whole page red. While the paint is still wet on the page, get just a dab of white paint and streak it in there. You don't want it pink! So, just gently stroke the white in and work it in slightly here and there. When the page is dry use colored pencils in dark red and silver and SCRIBBLE on the page. Have fun! I mean really scribble! Do the same thing on your blue page. Use some dark blue as well as a royal blue. Work them onto the page when the paint is still wet. Same thing - let it dry and then scribble it up!
3. Most likely this will take you a few days to complete because of the drying process. If you are in a hurry for this to dry, a hair dryer works wonders! Now you are ready for a nice clean sheet of white paper.
4. If you want straight lines use a ruler to draw lines to cut your stripes. If you are like me and are okay with things looking a little loosey-goosey then just cut the stripes that will be the flag stripes. Obviously you don't have to have the correct number of stripes or stars, because that would be a lot of tiny stripes and your students might not love this project by the end. In the book mentioned above, it shows all the different flags the US has had. If you have a little perfectionist, let them look at the other flags and pick one with less stars and stripes, so they can still feel like there flag looks "right."
5. Glue your stripes down. I like to use a scrapbooking glue stick. It is a giant glue stick that really sticks and doesn't warp your paper. You could also modge podge these on. The glue stick that is linked can also be found at Target, Michael's, or Hobby Lobby. It is totally worth the $5! I guard my glue stick with my life. :o)
6. Now you are ready for the stars! You can cut them, or draw them on with a nice white colored pencils. Note - not all colored pencils are created equal. Some are more waxy and don't give you much color. If you want to get some really NICE ones, the Prismacolors are the best. They are about $1.50 per pencil - yes, per pencil. These are in my guarded stash! You can get them at any craft or art store.
