Classical Conversations Cycle 3 - weeks 7-12

Week 7
John 1 song from Ross King

History subject - War of 1812
Book list:
The Star Spangled Banner
Youtube movie for this: History of the Star Spangled Banner
Notebooking pages: go under history > Modern Times > Modern Topics > War of 1812
This will be a fun time to do a flag art project.  We will be doing ours Eric Carle Style.
1. First you will need several pieces of good heavy art paper.  If you buy a sketch pad, you can just rip the paper out.  Each child will need a page to painted red and one to be painted blue.

2.Get out your paints and paint the whole page red.  While the paint is still wet on the page, get just a dab of white paint and streak it in there.  You don't want it pink!  So, just gently stroke the white in and work it in slightly here and there.  When the page is dry use colored pencils in dark red and silver and SCRIBBLE on the page.  Have fun!  I mean really scribble!  Do the same thing on your blue page.  Use some dark blue as well as a royal blue.  Work them onto the page when the paint is still wet.  Same thing - let it dry and then scribble it up!

3. Most likely this will take you a few days to complete because of the drying process.  If you are in a hurry for this to dry, a hair dryer works wonders!  Now you are ready for a nice clean sheet of white paper.

4.  If you want straight lines use a ruler to draw lines to cut your stripes.  If you are like me and are okay with things looking a little loosey-goosey then just cut the stripes that will be the flag stripes.  Obviously you don't have to have the correct number of stripes or stars, because that would be a lot of tiny stripes and your students might not love this project by the end.  In the book mentioned above, it shows all the different flags the US has had.  If you have a little perfectionist, let them look at the other flags and pick one with less stars and stripes, so they can still feel like there flag looks "right."

5.  Glue your stripes down. I like to use a scrapbooking glue stick.  It is a giant glue stick that really sticks and doesn't warp your paper.  You could also modge podge these on.  The glue stick that is linked can also be found at Target, Michael's, or Hobby Lobby.  It is totally worth the $5!  I guard my glue stick with my life.  :o)

6. Now you are ready for the stars!  You can cut them, or draw them on with a nice white colored pencils.  Note - not all colored pencils are created equal.  Some are more waxy and don't give you much color.  If you want to get some really NICE ones, the Prismacolors are the best.  They are about $1.50 per pencil - yes, per pencil.  These are in my guarded stash! You can get them at any craft or art store.

Classical Conversations Cycle 3 - weeks 1-6

*If you are new to homeschooling or new to Classical Conversations please don't feel like you have to get ALL of this done each week.  I have found the memory work brings out my kid's questions some weeks.  This is a way for me to flesh out the memory work.  However, I am SURE there will be weeks that we will just work on reviewing the memory work, our math, reading/writing, and a read aloud. I absolutely love reading books aloud with my kids!

If you don't already know about this sight and you are a Classical Conversations homeschooler, then you NEED to know about this sight Half A Hundred Acre Wood.  This link goes directly the the note booking pages she has made to go with CC.
We will be using note booking pages through www.notebookingpages.com  The lifetime subscription is $100.  However, I will say that if you really use this resource, it is well worth the $100!  There are truly pages that fit everything.  If that is not in your budget, they do offer several free pages.  I have no affiliation with this website, and I do not get any kickback for sharing this site.  I just like to pass along a good resource when I find one! :o)

Ross King is a musician here in Texas that also has kids in Classical Conversations.  He has written songs for each cycle's Bible memory.  You can buy them here.  For cycle 3 he has written John 1 in both Latin and English.

Our main History text will be A Child's First Book of American History.  I was on a search for an American History book that closely followed the scope and sequence of Classical Conversation's cycle 3.  This one also has great colored pencil drawings that neat to look at.

Our main science text to go along with CC will be Apologia's Anatomy and Physiology as well as some of the Let's Read and Find Out books for my younger kids.

Literacy Bags for Kindergarten - Letter I - Ice Cream

Reading:
Should I Share My Ice Cream - Elephant and Piggy

Poetry:

I had 5 scoops of ice cream no less no more.
One fell off, and that left four.
I had 4 scoops of ice cream as yummy as could be.
One fell off and that left 3.
I had 3 scoops of ice cream.
Yes, it is true.
One fell off and that left 2.
I had two scoops of ice cream in the melting sun.
One fell off and that left 1.
I had one scoop of ice cream sitting on the cone.
I ate it up, and and now there are none!

Science:
Follow this link here for a unit on ice cream.  It is geared more towards 1st.  It has a recipe for making ice cream in a bag.  Make and it and eat it!

Math:
We will be counting to 30 by 5's and by 1's. This is a great hands on activity.  Using the same pom pom balls, we will also being working on patterns.  Here is a cute example using scrapbook paper.

Ice Cream graphing - this would also be a good time to practice tally marks.

Art:
This looks like a fun sensory art project!

Sight Words:
It doesn't get any better than this!  This is an ice cream sight word activity and this amazing person even has all the sight words sets already printed on ice cream scoops!  Grab the words you are working on and have fun!

Literacy Bags for Kindergarten - Letter H - Hermit Crab

Reading:

I am sure you have noticed by now, I am a BIG fan of the Let's Read and Find Out series.  I think these are great for grades k-3.  They allow science to be a fun time of discovery and reading without being dry.  Science is FUN!

Poetry:
Poem link here
This is a cute little poem to go along with A House for Hermit Crab.  It has another pattern you can use to make your crab as well as a poem.

Science:
For science, we will be looking at shells and talking about what could live in a shell.  Here is a great blog that shows what someone else did for "shell observation."  There is also a sheet that you print for ocean observation.

Math: - Counting to 25
At this point we will be counting by 5's and also counting by 1's up to 25.  At least that is my plan. I am always ready to be flexible to whatever he needs and where he is.
Here is a fun hands on way to show counting to 25, and then lining up the cars by 5's to count by 5's.
This is parking lot math

Art:
We will be painting the crab and then decorating the shell.  This is also a great time to reinforce sequencing and retelling the story about what happened and the order in which it happened.

Sight Words:
If it is rainy or cold outside, just write the words on a big piece of paper and tape them down.  We will have each word we are working on on a 3x5 card.  He can toss the bean bag and then he has to find the word card that matches the word he tossed the bean bag to.  He will then match and say it.

Literacy Bags for Kindergarten - Letter G - Girraffe

Science:
I cannot stress enough that having kids narrate back to you what they have learned is a valuable learning tool!  Go to the library and check out a book about giraffes and have then tell you what they learned.  If this is new to you, read a page, then ask them to tell you what they heard.

Math: - counting to 20.  We are going to going by 5's now.  But if I feel that he is not ready, we will back up.
count to 20

Sight Words:

Here is a list of sight words by grade level.  We will be going through these about 4-5 a week.  We will be doing rainbow writing, play dough mats, tracing, etc.

Here is the list

And here is one of the activities we will be using.  It is very inexpensive.

Literacy Bags for Kindergarten - Letter F - Frogs

Poetry:
I saw a little frog,
He was cuter than can be.
He was sitting on a log,
and I'm sure he croaked at me.

Science:
These are the same cards that are on the letter B for butterfly.  There is also a frog one Here

Here is another frog life cycle that is presented in a cute way.
Life cycle fold out

Art:
This is pretty cute and simple.  I will keep looking for more art projects.

Literacy Bags for Kindergarten - Letter E - Elelphant

Reading:
The Elephant and Piggy books are fabulous for early readers!  There are very few words on a page and they are FUNNY!  It is great for kids just starting to read and they can easily understand context.  The thrill of reading the words and understanding the humor in it is priceless!

Poetry:
I found several elephant poems here is the list of them:
The Elephant Carries a Great Big Trunk
The elephant carries a great a great big trunk;
He never packs it with clothes;
It has not lock and it has no key;
But he takes it wherever he goes.
~ Anonymous

There are also elephant poems in Eric Carle's Animals Animals and in The Random House Book of Poetry.  These are all great poetry books the I highly suggest you have on hand for fun reading.

Science:
From here, I will ask Justin to repeat back to me a few facts that he remembers and I will write it down for him on the story paper.  He can then draw a picture of an elephant.

Math:
We will be counting to 14.  We will also be doing this Trace and roll activity
Justin still needs quite a bit more practice just writing his numbers.  Don't feel like you have to complete the page in one day.  If you see that your child is getting tired writing, let them be done and come back to it the next day.  Many kids start to hate writing when they have to do a lot of it or it is very hard for them.

Another activity to repeat from the previous week would be the using the peanuts and counting by 2's.  Also, there are some great songs for learning to skip count.  We will be learning the Classical Conversations songs for the tunes for skip counting by two.

Art:
How to Draw an Elephant step by step
This is will be what he can draw on his story paper if he needs help on how to draw an elephant.

How to Draw Elephant and Piggie - printable

We will be glueing squares of tissue paper on here by panting them on with a brush and decoupage.

Sight Words:

We will begin going off the Dolch site word list and playing some games This is one that I will be using.  You can use Banangrams to match the letters, or playdoh or wikisticks to form the letters.
